Designer & Artist
Design-Led. Systems-Minded. Human-Centered.
ScrollI'm a product designer with strong product management roots, blending UX craft, strategic thinking, and visual storytelling to bring clarity to complex problems. My background spans healthcare, clinical tools, and data-heavy platforms, environments where good design isn't just nice to have, it matters.
AI is embedded in how I work. It accelerates the early stages, sharpens my documentation, and gets ideas into reviewable form faster than any tool I've used before. But the judgment, knowing what to keep, what to fix, and what the user actually needs, stays human.
Personal projects and fine art run alongside my product work, fueling the curiosity and craft that keep me doing this.

An AI-native product design and PM workflow — illustrated through a clinical note triage concept project.
This portfolio has a history. Originally hand-coded by Alex, then migrated to WordPress, and rebuilt into its current form in collaboration with Claude (Anthropic). Alex directed the aesthetic, defined the interactions, and kept the judgment. Claude handled the execution. For how AI fits into professional project work, see How I Build with AI →

05 — About
I'm Alex Rieger, a Senior Product Designer and product strategist with nearly 8 years of experience building complex, data-rich tools across real-world evidence, clinical research, and interoperability-heavy healthcare systems. I specialize in the kind of work most designers find intimidating: regulated environments, multi-step clinical workflows, and products where precision and usability aren't a tradeoff.
My foundation is in communication design from Washington University in St. Louis, but my practice has grown well beyond visual craft. Over years of building healthcare systems end to end, I've developed deep domain expertise working directly alongside clinicians, research coordinators, data scientists, and engineers. I'm as comfortable defining product requirements and driving roadmap decisions as I am designing the interface.
AI is a deliberate part of how I work, not a shortcut but a force multiplier. Because I've built these systems manually from the ground up, I know where AI accelerates well and where it needs a trained eye to course-correct. I use it to compress timelines, sharpen documentation, and get ideas into reviewable form faster, then bring domain judgment to everything it can't do on its own.
This site showcases my personal creative practice, including UX explorations, fine art, animation, print, and branding. My professional product work is owned by the companies I have partnered with and cannot be shared publicly, but the case studies here reflect the same thinking I bring to everything: curiosity, rigor, and a belief that the best experiences feel effortless because someone worked very hard to make them that way.
